Family Centred Practice

Why does Cora Barclay endorse family-centred practice?
International research identifies family-centred practice as the most appropriate early intervention approach for children with disabilities including deafness.
Family-centred practice is mandated in the USA because international research demonstrates this approach achieves optimal outcomes in speech, language, audition and social-emotional outcomes for children.
Family-centred practice treats families with dignity and respect and sees the parents/carers as the expert on their child.

Information is shared between agencies and professionals so that families can make informed decisions on program practices and intervention options.

Family-centred practice promotes maternal self efficacy.
Parents self efficacy are critical to their children’s language learning and social-emotional development.

Parental involvement correlates with children’s speech, language and academic outcomes.
